AI in Business: Fundamentals to Applications

Learning to Lead with AI: Shift from Compliance to Creation
My biggest shift has been from understanding AI to exploring what it can do for the business
For most of my career in compliance, I have been someone who values structure, detail, and discipline. My work has revolved around understanding regulations, reviewing internal policies, and strengthening how risks are managed. It is a space where accuracy is critical, timelines are tight, and the cost of getting things wrong is high.
I currently manage the Quality Assurance function for compliance processes at Wells Fargo, across both Corporate and Investment Banking and Consumer Banking. In today’s environment, this role carries even more responsibility. Banks are under increasing regulatory scrutiny, and the risks around money laundering and financial crime continue to grow.
Traditionally, this has been a very manual process. It involves multiple levels of review, discussions, and iterations before arriving at a final outcome. It is thorough, but also time-consuming and dependent on human effort at every step.
Recognising the Shift Around Me
At the same time, I was watching AI evolve around me. About eight months ago, it had become one of the biggest talking points across the firm. Everyone was discussing it, exploring it, trying to understand its potential. Despite that, I still saw it from the outside.
Coming from a non-technical background, I believed AI was meant for engineers, not for someone in a business or compliance role like mine. That belief began to change as I noticed the pace of change more closely. It was not a single moment. It was the combination of a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape and the speed at which AI was advancing in areas like compliance and change management.
I realised that if I did not engage with AI training in a meaningful way, I would eventually fall behind.
Why I Chose to Learn AI
I decided to invest in learning AI Course in a structured way that would help me understand real business applications. When I came across the certificate programme in AI in Business: Fundamentals to Applications at ISB Online, I was unsure if it would be relevant for me.
But as I explored the curriculum and spoke with the team, my perspective shifted. I started to see how deeply connected AI is to business functions like compliance and risk. It was no longer something abstract. It was something I could actually use.
Learning that Felt Real and Applicable
The online AI course was designed to balance theory with practical application. The quizzes helped reinforce concepts, and the faculty-led video sessions made them easier to understand.
What stood out even more were the live social learning sessions. Being part of a highly participative cohort made the experience richer. The discussions were engaging, and the shared learning made a difference.
The faculty-led sessions were especially impactful. Seeing live demonstrations of how Generative AI and Agentic AI are being integrated into banking and financial services helped me connect learning with real application.
Applying AI in my Day-to-Day Work
Today, we are actively implementing Agentic AI within our compliance processes and workflows. Given our background in testing, risk, and compliance, it is critical to ensure that regulations are followed thoroughly and within strict timelines.
With our in-house Agentic AI models, we can analyse regulatory requirements more efficiently, identify gaps in compliance, and generate test scripts for quality assurance.
Tasks that would typically take one to two weeks can now be completed in just a few days. At the same time, this is not only about speed. It is also about improving accuracy, consistency, and standardisation across processes. A human in the loop remains essential for validating outputs and ensuring nothing critical is missed.
The Mindset Shift that Changed Everything
The biggest transformation for me has been internal. I have gone from someone who only knew AI as a term to someone who actively uses it in day-to-day work. Earlier, I was focused on understanding how AI works. Now, I am focused on what more it can do for us.
I feel more confident engaging with technology, asking better questions, and identifying opportunities where AI can create value.
Looking Ahead: The Future of AI in Finance
AI is still in its early stages in financial services, and there are many use cases yet to be explored, especially in the Agentic AI space. I see a future where machines and chatbots handle a large part of customer interactions, while human roles evolve towards oversight and decision-making.
AI certificate programme has helped me not just adopt AI in my current role, but also prepare for the larger shift that is coming.
